Disk Space, Premiere Scratch Disk

A friend told me that his Premiere Pro 2.0 slows down the performance of his computer.

He said that since he uses the Pro 2.0 for his video editing projects, his computer crawls. I told him that it could not be because of the 2.0. It may be because of the location of his scratch disk.

Premiere eats a lot of disk space. And if your scratch disk is located in your drive C (or in the drive where your system files are located) it may slow down your machine.

Firstly, you should not burden your system drive (usually drive C) with your files. You should put your files somewhere else. Save them in your other drive or any external HD.

Your scratch disk should not be located in your system drive (unless it is the drive which has the biggest space). Files like video captured, audio captured, video preview, rendered, etc. are all stored in your scratch disk when you save your premiere project or when you exported a video.

It is important to transfer the location of your scratch disk to optimize the performance of your computer.

The default location for scratch disk is the same folder where you save your premiere project.

To change the location, go to Edit / Preferences / Scratch Disk. This will bring you to the dialogue box where you can see the specific drive and folders for the scratch disk files. Change the location of your scratch disk. This may help to make your machine work faster again.

Grid and Pixel Grid

Aligning elements in your visual design is as critical as its positioning.

Poorly aligned elements can reduce or even lose the effectivity of your communication. Or the worst, it can go against the whole design.

You cannot always rely to your imagined line, and it is not advisable to use it.

To be sure that all your design elements are perfectly aligned, you can use the advantage of Grid.

To see the Grid, click View / Show / Grid.

Below are the photos without and with Grid.

If it may not look enough for you, that you really want to be more precised than that, you can use Pixel Grid.

Click View / Show / Pixel Grid.

You cannot see right away the pixel grid until you zoom in.

Here’s a photo with the pixel grid shown.

It looks like it doesn’t have any difference. But if you will zoom in, here’s what you can see.

Yes, Pixel Grid is to tiny that you have to really zoom in to see it.

Here’s that same photo with the Pixel Grid removed. I just retained the Grid.

You can have both grids shown at the same time, Grid and Pixel Grid.
